ZODIAC

1949 - today

Independent New Zealand label which was very prolific in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. Initially owned by Eldred Stebbing and his brother Phil Stebbing, the label began by releasing 78s in 1949 before shutting up shop in 1951 after Eldred and Phil briefly fell out. It was revived by Eldred in 1957. In the mid-1970s the parent company replaced Zodiac with the Key label, however, Zodiac is still used for reissues.

Early recordings were done in a studio in the Pacific Building in Queen Street, Auckland, then on Eldred's Grundig machine either on-site or in a school hall in Mays Ave, Mt. Roskill, Auckland. A studio was built in Eldred's family home in 1962 and was finally replaced by a purpose-built facility in Jervois Rd, Herne Bay, Auckland, in 1970.

The label is still controlled by the Stebbing family.
