Virrey

1955 - 2002

Discos Virrey, a prominent record company in Lima, was integral to Peru's vinyl record production era, especially between the 1950s and 1990s. Virrey records was founded 27th of may 1955.

During vinyl's peak from 1965 to 1982, about 18 producers, including Discos Virrey, thrived. Post-1950s, local vinyl production became feasible, reducing the need for overseas recording.

The industry's zenith in 1978 saw collaborations for major productions, but declined with cassettes' arrival in 1982. Discos Virrey was notable for its compact 7” records at 33rpm from 1971, featuring various artists and genres, marketed as affordable and accessible popular music.

Virrey defunct in 2002.
