Overseas Branch of the OWI

1942 - 1945




President Roosevelt established the United States Office of War Information by his Executive Order 9182 of 13 June 1942. The OWI was charged with conveying information to the world, and empowered to conduct propaganda to foreign nations to contribute to an Allied victory. The office operated from June 1942 until September 1945.

The Overseas Branch of the OWI planned, developed, and executed all phases of radio, press, publication, and foreign dissemination of propaganda. The Overseas Branch was divided into Atlantic Operations with headquarters in New York City, and Pacific Operations, with headquarters in San Francisco.
