TRUTONE

1940s - 1980s

Founded in the 1940s, Trutone was a key player in South Africa’s music industry, producing and distributing 78 RPM records that captured the nation's diverse sounds. Its recording studios supported local and international artists, shaping South Africa’s musical identity during a transformative era.

In the 1970s, Trutone merged with Teal Record Company to form Teal Trutone Music, distributing global labels like Vertigo and PolyGram. This expansion connected South African audiences with international music while promoting local talent.

By the late 1980s, Trutone was absorbed into PolyGram, marking the end of its independent legacy. Today, it is celebrated for its pivotal role in preserving South Africa's rich musical heritage.
