PAPRIKA'S

1941 - early 1950s

PAPRIKA'S was a New York City record label centered in Yorkville’s Hungarian community and closely tied to the retailer Paprikas Weiss at 1504 Second Avenue. It was founded 1941 by Eduard Weiss.

The catalog runs roughly PW-1 to about PW-101, with a separate SK series for Slovak material. Repertoire focused on Hungarian folk and popular styles—csardas sets, so-called “Gypsy” orchestras, and carols. Based on extant records and period advertising, the label was active by the mid-1940s at the latest and appears to have wound down in the early 1950s, with no evidence of a transition to 45s or LPs.
