CARIBOU

1959 - 1960s

Caribou Records was a Jamaican record label founded by Deonarine "Dada" Tewari in 1959. Tewari, of Indian heritage, was a pioneering figure in the Jamaican music industry. He established the Caribbean Recording Company in 1956, one of Jamaica's earliest recording studios, following the examples set by Ken Khouri and Stanley Motta.

Caribou Records played a significant role in the development of Jamaican music during the late 1950s and 1960s. The label released a variety of genres, including boogie, shuffle, and ska, showcasing the evolving musical landscape of Kingston during that era. Notable artists associated with Caribou include Lord Tanamo, Don Drummond, and The Mighty Vikings.

One of the label's notable releases is Don Drummond's "Bellevue Special," recorded in 1965.

Regarding the label's operational timeline, Caribou Records was active primarily during the late 1950s and 1960s.
