HISTORY

Otto Heineman was a pivotal figure in the early phonograph and gramophone industry. He established the Otto Heineman Phonograph Supply Company in December 1915, with a business address in New York and a factory in Elyria, Ohio. The company initially supplied motors to phonograph manufacturers and later expanded to produce various phonograph components, including reproducers and other parts. By 1918, the Otto Heineman Phonograph Supply Company had become a major supplier in the phonograph manufacturing industry.

One of the key products of the Otto Heineman Phonograph Supply Company was the Dean steel needle, under the John M. Dean Division. This division focused on producing steel needles for phonographs, which were an essential component for the playback of gramophone records. The Dean steel needles were known for their quality and durability.

The John M. Dean Company, which specialized in the manufacture of these needles, was originally formed in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1899 by John M. Dean, a native of Leeds, England. The company initially focused on the production of metal pins for various applications, including talking machines (phonographs). In 1910, the company relocated to Putnam, Connecticut, and expanded its product range to include talking machine needles. During the First World War, the demand for these products increased significantly due to the cessation of overseas imports. Eventually, the John M. Dean Company was sold to the Otto Heineman Phonograph Supply Company, and it operated as a division of Heineman’s company until it was reorganized as the General Phonograph Corporation in 1919.

These details highlight the importance of Otto Heineman and his companies in the early development of the phonograph and gramophone industry, particularly in the production of essential components like motors and needles.
